The Importance of Local News

Local news is journalism that focuses on events and issues that impact specific communities or geographic areas, often by involving community members in the reporting process. This type of journalism plays a crucial role in fostering community connection, keeping citizens informed about government actions that affect their lives and neighborhoods, and promoting civic engagement.

Local News in the United States is typically produced by local commercial broadcasting channels. Those stations may produce standalone newscasts that run for about a half-hour or short segments that air attached to national morning newscasts. The branding and studio design of these newscasts are usually separate from that of the television network they are affiliated with although some affiliates feature a regional opt-out during their morning programs.

The growing loss of local journalism has significant implications for our democracy. A 2018 Poynter Institute study found that people who feel a strong sense of community connection are more likely to say they always get their news from local sources. Increasing the amount of locally-produced, financially sustainable journalism can restore trust in the media and help communities thrive.
